Head Residential Assistant, Math Summer Camp

Multiple Locations · Seasonal

About The Position

Are you excited to lead a team, mentor fellow staff, and help create the magic of math camp? National Math Camps is seeking a Head Residential Assistant (Head RA) to serve as the on-site leader of our RA team and a key architect of the camp’s culture.

As Head RA, you’ll oversee the daily flow of residential life, guide and support the RA team, maintain smooth and consistent operations, and help ensure that campers feel safe, welcomed, and inspired. You’ll be both a leader and an active contributor—coordinating logistics, supporting camper well-being, planning traditions, and stepping in wherever coverage is needed. Rather than having your own camper group, you’ll play a flexible, high-impact role across the full camp community. If you enjoy mentoring peers, love building joyful and inclusive communities, and want to create the sense of wonder, belonging, and nerdy fun that makes math camp unforgettable, this is the role for you.

For 2026, our camps will be held at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA, and William Peace University in Raleigh, NC, with each camp hosting two 2-week sessions. Head RAs are required to work both sessions at their assigned camp and to participate in on-site pre-camp training, for a total onsite commitment of 5 weeks.

The Head RA role is great preparation for eventually serving as a Camp Director or Camper Support Director with National Math Camps. We’re excited to have our staff continue to grow with us as we open new camps in the coming years!

What You'll Do

What You’ll Do - Before Camp (15-25 hrs total)

  • Collaborate with the Camp Director and HQ to refine RA training, orientation materials, and residential policies.
  • Help create RA dorm assignments and counselor groups.
  • Build preliminary RA schedules, including dorm coverage, evening duties, activity rotations, and time off.
  • Prepare for camp traditions and special events.
  • Participate in remote training sessions.

What You’ll Do - At Camp

  • Lead and support the RA team: Provide day-to-day leadership, guidance, and mentorship to the RA team, helping them create a safe, joyful, and inclusive residential environment.
  • Run daily RA meetings: Facilitate short, focused check-ins to coordinate responsibilities, share updates, and address camper or team needs.
  • Manage RA schedules: Create and adjust daily schedules to ensure coverage for dorms, activities, field trips, evening duties, and time off—keeping workloads balanced and communication clear.
  • Serve as a flexible “floater” RA: Step in wherever coverage is needed—supporting camper groups, supervising activities, or assisting in dorms when RAs need backup.
  • Shape camp traditions and special events: Coordinate the traditions and all-camp events that make math camp special while also finding opportunities to introduce new traditions that bring joy, belonging, and delightful nerdiness to camp life.
  • Support camper well-being: Monitor camper experiences across dorms and activities, review daily surveys for patterns or concerns, and ensure timely communication with the Camper Support Director and Camp Director.
  • Assist with camper medical needs: Assist with the administration of camper evening medications as directed by the Camp Nurse, following all safety and documentation procedures, and serve as a backup for providing basic first aid when the nurse and Camper Support Director are not available.
  • Respond to residential incidents: Serve as the first point of escalation for RA questions involving camper behavior, interpersonal dynamics, or dorm issues, partnering with camp leadership on higher-level needs. Support RAs in writing clear, timely observations and incident reports.
  • Promote safety and uphold expectations: Ensure RA adherence to safety protocols and residential policies, monitor dorms and common areas, and help maintain a healthy, consistent community culture aligned with NMC values.
  • Assist with arrivals and departures: Help with camper check-in and check-out, welcome families, guide students through orientation, and participate in airport pickups or drop-offs as assigned.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned: We each have specific roles, but making camp run smoothly requires everyone to pitch in when needed.
