Learning Assistant, Math Summer Camp

About The Position

Are you passionate about math, excited to mentor young students, and eager to create a supportive and fun camp environment? National Math Camps is looking for enthusiastic learning assistants to join our summer math camps for mathematically talented middle school students in Summer 2026.

As a Learning Assistant (LA), you’ll play a vital role as a leader, mentor, and role model, fostering an inclusive and inspiring environment where students can explore the joy and challenge of mathematics within a supportive community. LAs receive pedagogical training and mentorship from faculty, gaining hands-on experience in creating engaging and collaborative learning spaces. This immersive role is perfect for people who love working with young learners, value community-building, and want to make a real impact.

For 2026, our camps will be held at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA, and William Peace University in Raleigh, NC, with each camp hosting two 2-week sessions. Learning Assistants are required to work both sessions at their assigned camp and participate in onsite pre-camp training. In addition, LAs will complete up to 5 hours of paid remote asynchronous training before arrival. Applicants must be comfortable with proof-based mathematics, have completed at least one year of college, and be at least 18 years old by the start of camp.

Learning Assistants who demonstrate strong mathematical ability, leadership, and teaching potential may be invited to continue developing their skills through our Apprentice Faculty program in future summers. Apprentice Faculty must have completed at least one year of a Masters/PhD program in mathematics or a related field.

What You'll Do

Assist with math classes: Support faculty in creating an engaging and inclusive classroom environment. Work with small groups or individual students, encourage exploration and productive struggle, and model curiosity and persistence as natural parts of the mathematical process. This includes assisting with classroom management.
Collaborate with faculty: Work closely with your faculty instructors to discuss student progress, share observations, and help identify ways to better support and challenge students.
Build your teaching skills: Take advantage of opportunities—supported by your faculty member—to lead parts of activities, guide small groups, or facilitate discussions, helping you develop confidence and experience as an emerging educator.
Participate in Open Math Time each evening: Engage with students through puzzles, hands-on activities, small-group explorations, problem stations, or informal math conversations. This is also a chance to share your own mathematical interests—bringing in favorite problems, topics, or activities that spark curiosity and joy.
Engage with students during lunch: Sit with students at lunch each academic day to build relationships and support our community-centered culture.
Supervise campers: Ensure student safety and well-being throughout the day, including escorting students between locations, taking attendance, and helping to uphold NMC’s policies and positive behavior expectations. Because faculty members are not always NMC employees or trained in our safety procedures, Learning Assistants serve as the primary NMC staff member responsible for student supervision during class.
Foster community & participate in camp life: Build meaningful relationships with campers and contribute to a welcoming, inclusive, and joyful camp culture.
Document camper progress: Regularly record observations about campers in your classes.
Support all-camp events: Assist with special events like variety shows, scavenger hunts, themed nights, and field trips, helping create memorable shared experiences.
Assist with arrivals and departures: Help with camper check-in and check-out, welcome families, guide students through orientation, and participate in airport pickups or drop-offs as assigned.
Assist with other duties as assigned: We each have specific roles, but making camp run smoothly requires everyone to pitch in when needed.

What We're Looking For

Experience & Background

At least 18 years old and completed 1+ years of college by the start of camp.
Completed an introduction to proofs course and a discrete mathematics course, or have equivalent mathematical experience.
Experience working with kids in any capacity (e.g., tutoring, mentoring, babysitting, youth programs).
Experience as a learning assistant, teaching assistant, tutor, or similar.
Experience with math enrichment programs (math camps, math circles, etc) as a student or staff member is a plus.

Skills & Attributes

Responsible, flexible, and proactive—able to take initiative and collaborate effectively with faculty and fellow staff.
Excellent interpersonal skills; able to build rapport with middle school students and help create a welcoming, inclusive classroom and camp environment.
Patient and encouraging, with the ability to support students through mathematical challenges, frustration, and productive struggle.
Skilled at listening, communicating clearly, and helping students navigate group work and classroom dynamics.

Logistics

Dates

We have the following dates & locations available for summer 2026:

6/18 - 7/18 at Camp Conway (Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, CA)
6/25 - 7/25 at Camp Sierpinski (William Peace University, Raleigh, NC)

These dates include on-site staff training followed by two 2-week camp sessions. LAs are required to live in the dorms near campers for the duration of the program.

Compensation

$3,600 for the full period listed above, plus room, board, and round-trip travel
Up to 5 hours of remote pre-camp training, paid at $20/hour

Note about California positions: Due to California labor laws, LAs at Camp Conway are paid hourly while at camp rather than via a stipend. However, we will ensure that the total compensation is at least the amount listed above.
